4 Reasons Why Every Organization Needs A Resilience Trainer

In a world that is filled with constant changes, many increasing demands, high levels of burnout and increasing levels of job dissatisfaction amongst employees, evidence shows without a shadow of a doubt that resilience coaching and resilience training is needed now more than ever before. According to a study published by IResearchNet Psychology, it is stated that, “The modern workplace in this 21st century is characterized by rapid technological change, competitive pressures, and evolving organizational structures. Because of this there are elevated levels of occupational stress.”

 When we look at organizations all around the world today and the fast paced ever evolving world of work, we see clearly that resilience training is no longer a “nice-to-have activity” to try to fit into the work calendar. Rather it is a non-negotiable if people and organizations today are going to: thrive, stand out and rise above the disruption. However, despite all of this, many companies still fail to see the value in investing in a dedicated resilience trainer or coach. It is because of this that in this month’s blog, we are going to take a look at 4 Reasons Why Every Organization Today, Needs A Resilience Trainer & Coach”.

Here Are The 4 Reasons Why Every Organisation Needs A Resilience Trainer/Coach

Reason #1- Resilience Training Will Equip Your Staff With The Skills Needed to Navigate The Constant Changes & Demands of Life

The people you work with on a daily basis are not just another “employee” or “number” working within your organization. Rather, they are real people who face real challenges- both at work and in their personal life. Thus, if we want our employees to show up and perform with peak and optimum performance, then it is crucial that all employees be given ongoing resilience training opportunities, so they can learn how to navigate the various changes of life and work.

As children growing up, we were often told to “be mentally tough” and “be strong under pressure”, however if we are completely honest with ourselves, how many of us actually knew practically what to do when persons said that?

In fact, more often than not, we were just left to figure out by trial and error how to be resilient when faced with difficult situations. But, what if there was a way to proactively learn how to build a resilient life and a resilient organization without having to wait to learn it through trial and error? Well, that is exactly where resilience training comes in.

If organizations today wish for their staff to give of their best performance and their best efforts at work, then they need to invest in their employee’s mental, psychological and overall development. People are the core and heartbeat of every organization. Thus, I believe that if we invest in “building” resilient people and resilient employees, then we can build resilient organizations.

The reason this is important, is because, whatever happens in the personal life of an individual, also has an impact on their professional life. (The same is true vice versa. Whatever happens professionally also impacts the personal life of your employees). Thus, with resilience training, your staff will be aided in learning how to better juggle their personal responsibilities, along with their work commitments without having to experience burnout or guilt.

Regardless of our ethnicity, our biological make up or our political preferences, one thing remains true about every human being on this earth: we all have our own challenges and “giants” to face and the only way we can navigate through those situations is if we are equipped with the tools necessary to build a resilient life.

Reason #2- Resilience Training Will Teach Your Staff How to Increase Productivity Without Having to Compromise Their Mental Health

 Resilience training gives employees the tools needed to cope with stress, recover from setbacks, and maintain good mental health. This as a result helps to reduce the risks of burnout and its spill over effects:

-          Absenteeism;

-          Employee turnover;

-          And job disengagement

When employees are burnt out, not only are they hindered from being able to operate as effectively or efficiently as they should, but it also impairs their productivity and the organization's overall performance. Furthermore, when employees are burnt out, they slowly lose passion and interest overtime in the company and its mission. It is because of this that resilience training is needed. Resilience training teaches your staff how they can actively care for their mental and emotional wellbeing. It also equips your staff with the skills needed to increase their productivity and performance, without having to compromise their mental health.

It is often believed that in order for productivity to increase and for performance to improve, then individuals must do ten times the amount of work than what they are currently doing now. However, this is not the case. According to organizational psychologist Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan in their book 10x is easier than 2x, it is stated that, to go 10x in any area of your life, “it isn’t about doing more. Rather, it’s about doing less. Going 10x is about the simplification of your focus down to the core essentials. Then you remove everything else.

In other words, to boost productivity, it doesn’t take ten times the amount of effort. Rather, all it takes is focusing on the few key most important things that will give you the greatest returns.

If employees try to boost productivity the traditional way of “having to exert greater effort in order to get greater returns”, this will only leave your staff feeling more fatigued and frustrated. This is the reason why resilience training is important. Resilience training will teach your staff the skills of how to focus on the key most important things in life, that will help them to gain the most results. With this comes not only improved performance but also, enhanced outputs and increased revenue for the company.

Reason #3- Resilience Training Will Aid Your Staff In Finding Greater Purpose & Satisfaction Within Your Organization Thus Lowering Job Turnover Rates

According to (Shibru, 2022), high turnover rates can often lead to: increased recruitment cost, avoidable time being spent on training new employees, loss in sales and an impaired brand image. When employees do not feel a sense of purpose, fulfilment or satisfaction as members within your organization, they are more likely to leave, thus increasing job turnover rates. Furthermore, when staff do not feel like they are fulfilled within the organization, it can have an impact on the overall culture of the organization. This is why with resilience training, employees are taught how they can find greater purpose and meaning within your organization thus resulting in greater overall commitment. If your employees feel cared for, satisfied and filled with purpose within your organization, they are more likely to stay, even when challenges such as global pandemics, rising recessions and changing economies may arise. Resilience training fosters an environment where staff feel supported and confident to handle challenges, which in turn improves culture and commitment.

Reason #4- Resilience Training Will Help Your Organization To Gain Competitive Advantage

In an ever changing world of digital transformation and new market trends, resilience training aids organizations in being more agile and innovative, so they can stand out amongst their competitors. The ability to try new ideas and recover swiftly from setbacks is all rooted in an organization's ability to be agile and innovative. Through resilience training, teams are taught how they can build mind-sets of learning, experimentation and creativity.

Those organizations which intentionally invest in their staff’s ability to develop these critical skills, do not just survive change. Rather, they leverage the change. They do this so as to gain the competitive advantage. They see “chaos, change and challenges” as opportunities to grow, be creative and be innovative.

Organizations on the other hand which do not see the value in teaching staff these critical skills, are not able to stand out in such a crowed competitive market. This is why resilience training is so important. Having a resilience trainer will help your staff to shift their mindset from one of “going back to normal” to instead one of “building the new normal”.

So in summary, let us always remember that investing in resilience training for your staff is not just a “nice-to-have activity” to try to fit into the work calendar. Rather, it is a strategic investment if organizations today are going to thrive, navigate change and stand out in the face of disruption.

Don’t wait for the next disruption to test your team’s resilience. Build it now by investing in their resilience development. Your people are the heartbeat of your organization, and their resilience is your greatest asset. If you have a resilient team which is made up of resilient people, then you will have a resilient organization.
